Ease Tension with Yoga

Most of us live in a fast paced life, running from one scheduled event to another. When you have young children it might seem worse, trying to balance everyone's activities and schedules and often needing to be in more than one place at one time. 

This is why our yoga practice is so important to our health and wellness. We need to find the time to turn inward and simply breathe. We need to schedule downtime to create a balance in our lives. 

Uttanasana (Forward Fold) is my go-to yoga pose when I'm feeling stressed out. You don't have to change your clothes or be on a yoga mat, you can do it right now in your cubicle! Simply stand in Mountain Pose, feet firmly planted and fold over. 

Uttanasana (Forward Fold) stretches the hamstrings but if you feel a lot of pulling in the backs of the legs please bend the legs slightly and then shift the weight into the balls of your feet. This pose calms the mind and reduces anxiety. Try it the next time you feel stressed out or at your wits end, stay in the pose for five breaths and close the eyes. Focus on your inhale and exhale, letting go of the idea of completely folding into your legs and instead honoring the pose and the shape that your body is making today. Allow the benefits of yoga to ease the tension you are holding in your body.
