Teaching Kids Balance

Being still does not come naturally to children. We have to teach them. I have discovered that some children learn best by feeling. In order to learn how to balance they have to feel something reacting to their balancing. Placing toys on your child's head is a great way to learn how to balance on one foot. The child feels the toy shift and fall when she isn't balanced. And it gives the child a goal, to keep the toy on their head.

Play around with this technique with your child. Choose a small, lightweight toy that has a flat bottom, like a rubber duck and take turns balancing the duck on your head while you walk around the room. Now try standing on one foot, how high can you count while balancing?
